The Ukrainian Academy of Art: A Brief History is composed of two parts. The first is a scholarly essay and chronology of the events of 1917. This includes a complete history of the founding of the first higher learning establishment for the arts in Ukraine, from writing the charter to selecting the first rector, Fedir Krychevsky. The second, illustrated part presents the works of the Academys first professors-Heorhii Narbut, Vasyl Krychevsky, Fedir Krychevsky, Oleksandr Murashko, Mykhailo Boichuk, Abram Manevich, Mykola Burachek, and Mykhailo Zhuk-that were displayed at the inaugural exhibition in December 1917, which marked the official opening of the Academy of Art. This important book not only offers a reconstruction of significant events in the history of Ukrainian art, but also covers the role the elite played in building artistic, community, and state institutions.
